A shorter writeup than usual, since I participated less than usual. But long enough to warrant a cut tag )

They've re-posted the MIT Hunt puzzles. Here are the ones I got to help solve.

* Banner Headline. Beautiful and doesn't require lots of puzzle experience to solve.
* Chatterbox
* The Arena
* This is a Recording
* Bulls and Cows
* Exotic Tactics

The puzzles aren't reposted yet, so I can't link to them nor can I use them to jog my memory, but I want to capture what I can while I remember it. [The puzzle site always goes down once the Hunt is over, and some time later the puzzles are posted in the official archives, but that intervening downtime is frustrating.] Behind a cut for spoilers and length )

So, overall impressions? A nicely done hunt. The theme was entertaining and well-executed. For the most part, people seemed to feel that the puzzles were hard but fair. I had a good time.

Cut, again, for length. )

Most importantly, I had a lot of fun. Even when I was feeling frustrated with "The Arena", I was enjoying the camaraderie of my teammates and admiring the elegance of the puzzles. And that's why we do this to ourselves every year.

So, until next year, this is 530nm330Hzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, heading for bed.

So, yeah, there was this Hunt. It was really cool. Best part: I spent the weekend doing cool stuff with the awesome people from Immoral, Illegal, and Fattening. It was also delightful getting a few moments with my awesome NPL friends on other teams. Too brief, alas, and many of you were gone before wrapup. I hope we'll make it to Baltimore this summer and get to socialize under a little less pressure.

Overall impressions of Hunt )

Puzzles I worked on )

At 5:00 I woke up, went back to our HQ (because we had agreed to strike the room at 6am) and learned that Beginner's Luck had found the coin at 3:10am. Congratulations, guys!

Summary )

So that's my one gripe. The Bombers did an amazing job of entertaining and challenging us, and once again I say "kudos" and "thank you." I have high hopes for next year's Hunt by Beginner's Luck (or whatever you call yourselves next year), and once again I say "congratulations" and "well done." I am grateful to my teammates on II&F for once again inviting me to solve with y'all and providing just the right balance of "We want to win, but not at the expense of having fun," and once again I say "thank you" and "wait 'til next year!"

Everyone else seems to be posting about how we're hanging around waiting for hunt to start.

We are such geeks.

An idea for Evil Midnight to consider for next year... it might be interesting for statistical purposes only to allow teams to indicate, without penalty, when they click "check answer" whether they front-solved or back-solved the puzzle. Otherwise, one could end up with a statistic that, say, ten teams "solved" puzzle X when actually none of them could make any headway into it, but its meta made it backsolvable.

Good:

Some beautiful puzzles. Enough variety in difficulty that there was usually something that we could make progress on.

Delightful teammates.

Didn't embarrass myself -- got to play with the big kids and held my own. Made a real contribution to the team.

Don't have to write next year's Hunt. :-)

Got to see and hang out with a bunch of NPL folks.

Disappointments:

Didn't get to see enough NPL folks, nor hang out with the ones I did see for long enough.

Only came in contact with about ten percent of the puzzles that were out there. You were right, [livejournal.com profile] hathor, that puzzle you mentioned was right up my alley. Pity I didn't see it until after the Hunt was over. Never saw "Subservient Chicken" (and then embarrassed myself by asking [livejournal.com profile] qaqaq at the wrapup which had been his favorite puzzle).

There were too many puzzles that we missed solving by inches, which was frustrating.

Back from Hunt. (Yes, Michael, and Arisia too, but mostly Hunt.)

Starting to catch up. It will take a while.

Nutshell review of Palindrome's hunt: 'Nuff fun? Yay!

Congratulations to the Evil Midnight Bombers What Bomb at Midnight. Thanks to Palindrome for constructing a fun Hunt. Thanks to Immoral, Illegal, and Fattening for inviting me to solve on the team this year.

I had a great time, largely because I felt that I held my own on the team. I solved one puzzle mostly myself, was part of several successful solving pairs, and made (I think) useful contributions towards a fair number of puzzles. Sure, I also made my share of mistakes, and there were some puzzles that still frustrate me, but there were plenty of "Aha!" moments and that felt good.

Detailed writeup of the weekend will, I hope, follow.

[livejournal.com profile] jedusor has posted an announcement of team signups, including for unmatched people seeking a team. Before I toss my hat into that ring, I'll remind y'all that I hope to participate this year (starting at 5:30 Saturday) and I'd rather serve with people I know than with strangers, so....
