Last week's Newton Tab had a recipe for chocolate pots de creme that looked really simple and wonderful, so we decided to make it yesterday when [livejournal.com profile] michelel72 and [livejournal.com profile] violetcheetah were over. The first attempt was a complete disaster because the thermometer I was using misregistered the temperature, and I ended up with scrambled eggs instead of custard. Second attempt was more successful, although I think we overcompensated for the custard and it didn't set enough. Definitely worth doing again until we get it right!

(I'd link to the recipe but it doesn't seem to be online. It's by Christopher Kimball and is based on a recipe from Cooks Illustrated about two years ago.)

To accompany the pots de creme, we made a minestrone. I love soup weather.

And since the pots de creme called for six egg yolks, and since we were planning to serve fleishigs tonight, I used the egg whites to make pareve chocolate meringue cookies.

Then today I succumbed to a really bad cold and spent the day asleep in bed. We ended up canceling the playdate we had planned with [livejournal.com profile] lucretia_borgia, [livejournal.com profile] sethg_prime, and their kids. [livejournal.com profile] introverte took some chicken soup from the emergency stash in the freezer and made some fresh matza balls to accompany it, and I'm starting to feel better.
