Gustatorily, this was a very successful trip to New York.

Sunday for lunch on the strength of a friend's recommendation we tried Mr. Broadway, a new place to us, on B'way and 37th. It's mostly a deli, but they have a sushi bar. And it was the best sushi I've ever had. The pieces were just the right size to place in one's mouth and wait for the narrative to unfold. The textures were great, as were the sudden hint of ocean in the tuna (or was that just the mercury?).... the rush of flavor as the avocado melted followed by the crisp, clean sensation of the cucumber.... the alternating fat and flesh of the salmon.... this was sushi to take one's time with.

Sunday for dinner we went to Chattanooga, about which I have raved before. This time the kids and my parents joined us. Chattanooga never disappoints, and everyone left impressed and sated. (OK, to be fair, their desserts aren't worth staying for. We went home and had chocolate cake and coffee there.)

And last night H and I ate at Sushi Metsuyan, which also has an extensive steak menu. In fact, I was so satisfied from the sushi I'd had the day before I didn't order any sushi at all. Instead, we split a dumpling sampler appetizer. That may have been the spiciest dish I have ever eaten in my life; even the outsides of my cheeks were tingling. The dumplings were amazingly tasty. H and I each ordered a steak; hers was the Steak Sambal which is in a chili sauce, and I ordered the Tokyo Cajun Steak which was very good. H's steak was a bit underdone and sinewy, but otherwise quite tasty. The house fries tasted as good as always, although they are now served on a plate instead of in the cool wire cones that they used to use. Service was adequate if a bit confused and slow at times; and while we were quite satisfied with our food on this outing it remains sadly true that, while this restaurant at its best provides an exciting and satisfying experience, it has enough off nights that I always go there with a little trepidation.
