Happy fifth birthday, MITG&SP!
Feb. 29th, 2008 07:05 amTwenty years ago tonight, after the late showing of the LSC movie, the founding board of the MIT G&S Players gathered in 26-100 (while we were doing post-movie cleanup) to formally adopt our bylaws and found a group that we expected would survive for a year or two.
(We selected the date so that on the off chance that the Players would make it past two decades then there could be a twenty-first anniversary performance of The Pirates of Penzance. Boy, were we geeks!)
Since tonight is Shabbat, I sadly cannot join MITG&SP in person for the quadrennial birthday party. But I am proud to have created something that has brought joy to so many people, spawned several marriages, and increased the amount of beauty in this world.
Happy fifth birthday, MIT G&S Players! May you celebrate many more!

Date: 2008-02-29 02:04 pm (UTC)But when I returned to MITG&SP for the most recent Patience, I noted with some shock that it had been 17 years since my first MITG&SP show -- making me possibly the first person to cross the completely esoteric more-years-between-my-first-MITG&SP-show-and-the one-I'm-in-now-than-between-birth-and-first-show boundary. :)

I would love to come back to MIT to participate in such an event. The hardest part would be to work out who gets to sing what, and how to avoid making it last five or six hours! I think it could be a decent fund raiser for MITG&SP, as it should bring in a big crowd.
