A few weeks back, Alissa asked "How do you spell 'chicken'?" and, a few moments later, "How do you spell 'allowed'?" and, finally, "May I please have some tape please?"* Next thing we knew, there was a sign on our back door:

So that night, I asked her about it. "Why did you make that sign?"

"Because I didn't want any chickens to come into our house while were asleep and peck at us. That would hurt."

And it seems to have worked. We haven't had any chickens break into our house!

* - Note the four-year-old's common construct, the "duple please"

That is excellent. However, I think she may have placed the sign too high. Chickens are fairly short, and may not be able to read the sign at the height at which she has placed it.

They do, however, have to be able to reach the door knob, so she may be okay.

How did you know she was saying "allowed" rather than "aloud", by the way? Or did you just guess right? (The spelling is important in this case, because if she'd put up a "No Chicken Aloud" sign, you'd have had very quiet chickens in and out of your house at all hours.)

Priceless. This belongs in my journal this year, what with the signs theme. One day if I'm lazy, I may just link to this page.

When I was 4, I had a nightmare that pigeons flew from the hallway through the front door of our apartment and into our kitchen and then sat on my shoulders and pecked at my arms and hands. Since then, I've always slept with my hands under the pillow.

Hmm, my parents need a similar sign. They had a wild turkey fly through a plate glass window in their house over New Years....
