BTW, the Malden rabbi's drash today was on "why did Korach etc. have to be buried alive?" :-) His answers were: (1) to give them a chance to do teshuvah before dying, and (2) b/c if they died natural deaths it wouldn't be as clear that Moshe was right and they were wrong. I liked the first one better. Don't know the origin but if you're interested I can inquire.
