I'm assuming that for 23A, you think that "iron, oxide reds" is a definition for agates? Because I completely don't get that. Agate is mostly a silica mineral and, while it can be red, it's usual characteristic is being banded (and, most often, a sort of moss green color). I'm also surprised you didn't think of the word "agate" as a type size.

for 2D, I have to admit that it had never occurred to me that tonic could be a musical reference. And that I had gotten confused by 4D because I was thinking of Ken Jennings of Jeopardy fame (though I did figure the answer out correctly). Other stuff I couldn't get I have less excuse for.

According to NI3, "agate" is a synonym for "iron-oxide red", a color. In retrospect, this was an awful clue: it's an obscure NI3 definition. I got carried away by the chemistry surface. Sorry. (Of course I thought of it as a type size, but ironically I thought that would be too obscure.)

The Ken Jennings red herring was also too cool to pass up. Hopefully it didn't throw too many people.
