OK, all you Mac geniuses.

I just installed Finale 2009, and I've discovered that while on the PC the enter key could be used to add a note to a chord in speedy entry, on the Mac the fine folks at Coda MakeMusic have decided that the enter key on the keyboard shall move to the next staff (which on the PC was shift-down-arrow, which on the Mac goes to the next layer.... but I digress). Yet the list of keyboard shortcuts says that "Enter" can be used to add a note, while (swirly icon that I assume means "return") goes to the next staff.

Experimenting here at work with my external keyboard I find that Finale distinguishes between the enter/return key and the numeric keypad "enter" key. It's the latter that does what I want. But there's no numeric keypad on the MacBook Pro, apparently. I just figured out that fn+return does what I want, but it'll be a pain to need both hands for this common command.

So: is there a way to configure the Mac to make the "return" key generate "enter" instead without using the "fn" key?

Um, run the program under the Windows emulator?

Look up something called "DoubleCommand". I've been using it for years to "fix" the function key being on the opposite side of the keyboard from the arrow keys (so page up/home/etc was a two-handed operation). It has a bunch of things you can change - maybe it'll help you.

Oh, yeah. It would have been nice if I'd included this the first time: http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/

The MacBook Pro actually has a dedicated Enter key. It is located to the left of the left-arrow key.

Not on mine. From Googling around it seems that they removed the numeric keypad equivalents from the MBP within the past year.

In any case, DoubleCommand has done the trick for me, at least for now. I still need to retrain my fingers, but at least the key is available.

Very odd. My November 2007 one has it.

Glad DoubleCommand works for you, however.

Try using keyboard remap...
