We were supposed to visit my parents in New York for Shabbat. (We last saw them for Passover and we won't see them again until July; this was the only weekend in between that we were both free.)

Had I listened to a traffic report before we left, we would have known about the methane truck that turned over on the Mass. Pike this morning, closing it in both directions. We would have taken I-95 the whole way, and probably arrived right about now.

Instead, we spent three hours driving 25 miles, then two hours driving back.

I wasted a vacation day, we're scrambling for Shabbat plans, and we don't get to see my folks (and they don't get to spend time with the grandkids). All because I couldn't be bothered to find out about the leading news story in Boston today.

At least the kids were cooperative in the car. This could have been much, much worse.

I keep an eye on Boston.com throughout my workday, so I had seen the article about the shutdown. It's a shame I didn't happen to get chatting with you about it.

I am fond of the SmarTraveler website and I have their number (617-374-1234) programmed into my cell phone so that I don't have to try to find a radio traffic report. They're not always perfectly up to the minute, of course, but I recommend the phone option if you aren't already using it.

Sorry your weekend got messy. Hope it gets better.

Yeek! Sorry you got messed up, but glad you were able to get back home. (If it makes you feel any better, I hadn't heard about that 'til reading your post.)

Whoops! There were a lot of stories like this. Personally I was checking the traffic to see if 95S to 495N to the Pike would be better than 95N to the Pike during Friday rush hour traffic. I kept checking to see if the spill had been cleaned up. In the end, I tried taking 109 to 140 to 122 to the Pike. That worked, but took 1:45 to get onto the Pike. All in all not bad. 95S would have been better.

As usual, I was on my way to West Hartford to visit Drummer Girl and kinder.

Sorry you had such a trouble on the Pike. Didn't you call traffic on your cell phone or check the radio to find out what the problem was?
