I've fallen behind on book blogging. Oops. Here's the fiction I've read lately:

Today I read Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer. I had read it when it was serialized in Analog, but I have not yet read Humans or Hybrids. I took all three out of the library the other day, and read Hominids today. Still a great story, and I'm looking forward to the other two.

I also finished One for the Morning Glory today. It was fun enough, although I found his use of words to mean something other than what they normally mean to be very distracting and not at all fantastic.

Finally, I've been working my way through the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold. They're a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to finishing them. I've been rationing them, limiting myself to one every few weeks so I don't race through them all too fast.

Oh, I can imagine! BTW, speaking of which - did you buy the anthology with Winterfair Gifts in it? I haven't b/c I don't like romances, and didn't want to buy a whole book for one story, but I've been curious...

Yes, I do. You're welcome to borrow it - it's a great story.

I read One for the Morning Glory a few years ago, at [livejournal.com profile] introverte's suggestion. Enjoyed it, but not enough to rave about it.

The Miles books, I adore. On the other hand, I read Hominids on a recommendation and felt kind of frustrated and disappointed by it. I forget why; I think I was turned off by the idea that the Neanderthals would have formed a perfect pacifist eco-friendly society. (Oh, and the rape-as-character-development. And the ensuing fear/mistrust of men that magically dissipated when faced with a Neanderthal.)

I didn't know there were sequels; I wonder whether I'd find them as frustrating.

Those were my two issues with Hominids when it was serialized; they bothered me again re-reading it, but part of why I'm returning to the series is that I'm hoping that Sawyer has a good reason for them both which will be revealed in Humans or Hybrids. His usual level of storytelling is such that I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt through the end of the trilogy.

Interesting aside: I heard him speak at Arisia last January (fortunately, his reading was during Shabbat, so it was while I wasn't Mystery Hunting) and he explained that he now plans his trilogy titles so that they will be shelved together and in the correct order when bookstores and libraries shelve alphabetically by author first and title second. So this trilogy is Hominids, Humans, Hybrids; the trilogy he's working on now is (IIRC) Wake, Watch and Wonder, and so on.

Of course, that would be much more effective if you weren't anonymous. :-)
