On the first night of Sukkot, it's traditional to "invite" Abraham as a spiritual/kabbalistic guest to the sukkah. (There's a different guest for each night.) We use this as a chance to get the kids to say what they know about the figure in question. Tani proclaimed: "Avraham was a weirdo!"

Tani is always quite happy to proclaim himself a weirdo, so this wasn't meant as an insult, but still: What?

"A weirdo is someone who doesn't try to be like everybody else. Everyone else was praying to idols and false gods, and they must have been pressuring Avraham to be just like them. And he didn't; he figured out about Hashem and he stuck to his beliefs, even if it made him different. So he was a weirdo!"

OK, kid. We'll give you that one.

Later that evening, around 8:30, we were doing dishes and I turned to Alissa. In my mock-angry voice, I asked: "And who said you could stay up an hour and half past your bedtime, young lady?"

Alissa looked up at me and answered matter-of-factly:

"Hashem."

OK, kid. You win one, too. :-)
