In staring at lots of maps of the United States recently, variously colored red and blue, I noticed:

Excepting Hawaii, whose borders are completely natural, I think there's only one state whose borders do not include at least one segment which runs either due north-south or due east-west.

Which one?

The District is not a state.

Eastern border with New Brunswick runs true N-S.

Yes. Its eastern, western, and southern borders are bodies of water, and its northern is a straight line connecting the Hudson at 41 degrees North with the Delaware at 41 degrees 40 minutes North. So it's still an arbitrary straight line, but it's not true N-S or E-W.

I had thought that, too, but there's a segment of its northern border that is roughly 34.8 degrees North and seems to be due E-W --- although zooming in on it, there may be a slight angle there; it's hard to tell with the projection I've got available.

That was our first guess too, though.

I got it wrong: I was going to guess that it's the same state that has the lowest highest point, but then I read the comments and saw that [livejournal.com profile] crs already got it right.

Nah, it's the state with the highest population density.
