Sun NYT Crossword

I'd love to hear how Patrick came up with this theme. All the phrases were natural, provided the right extra letters in the right order, and had symmetrical lengths. I suppose one could export one's wordlist and write a perl script to extract all the entries that met the necessary criteria, but it's still an impressive feat of construction, and fun to solve to boot. Beautiful.
Except for the crossing of 51D/64A, where I'm not sure if my guess is correct.
