I have finally posted the MP3 of the piano reduction of movement 17. (Updated status page is here, from which you can select the MP3 files)

So what took so long?

I'm using Finale 2006 (yes, I'm two versions behind, because I don't use it enough to justify paying $100 each year for an upgrade) which comes bundled with the "Garritan Personal Orchestra". This is a selection of exceptionally high quality instrument samples. Their Steinway piano is wonderful, and it's what I've been using for all these "computer-generated piano" MP3 files that I've been posting.

This particular movement relies on a snare drum part as well, so in this case it's a reduction for piano and drum. But even when I loaded the "percussion section" samples into the software, I was getting no snare drum sound. Using the standard Finale "SoftSynth" MIDI drivers played the snare drum just fine.

So I figured I'd record the piano part with the GPO sample, and the snare drum with the SoftSynth sample. Finale won't do both simultaneously, so I recorded each one as a separate .wav file and used Audacity to merge them. Except that for some reason the tempos were different -- the piano file was 6:17.387 and the drum file was 6:21.667. And it wasn't a uniform scaling difference for some reason, so I couldn't just resample the snare drum to fit the piano line.

I was astounded at the idea that a "percussion section" from such a great library as the Garritan would lack a snare drum. So I tried every note and discovered to my amazement that while the snare drum is note D2 in the General MIDI standard, the Garritan samples had it placed as C4 (middle C). So I finally realized that if I created a new percussion map in Finale that played C4 instead of D2 for the snare drum, I could get everything I needed through the GPO after all.

And it worked. So I finally have the recording that I've been trying to get done each night since Sunday. I hope you enjoy it.
