Today is the fifteenth of Kislev, which means I have passed the halfway point in the eleven months of saying kaddish for my father.

I measure things, I track statistics. That's who I am. So here they are: In the 164 days since the funeral, I have davened 515 services with a minyan, and led (at least part of) 96 of them. I have had to daven mincha alone on 11 days (all since the shift off of Daylight Savings Time), which gives me a success rate of almost 98% overall and about 93% for mincha.

I remember one Friday night when I was a child; the shul had a special service highlighting the kids in the Hebrew school. We were sitting in the front rows in the Moreida auditorium, and at the end of the service, when the mourners said Kaddish, I heard adults behind me saying a prayer that I knew and, in youthful innocence, joined in. I remember my parents rushing up to where I was to stop me and explain. [Some other time I'll tell the story of the Little League game where I learned that there was a rule about "tagging up" --- the hard way.]
