Oy vey, this blank verse stuff takes far too long
When I've got lots of catching up to do:
Some links to items from the New York Times
Sorry, folks, I just gotta get all these memories captured and it'll go a lot faster as prose.
I was amused by the NYT's account of the pope's visit to a NYC synagogue: Jewish men and women sat in the pews to the left, the men wearing white yarmulkes. In the pews to the right were a group of Roman Catholic cardinals and bishops wearing red skullcaps. From the balcony above, where the news media sat, their respective caps suggested the beginning of a game of checkers.
In other papal NYT coverage, Alissa saw this picture on the front of Monday's paper and wrote her own caption: "That's an important king, and the woman is very happy because he just asked her to marry him and be his queen." A nice story.
And a tragic item about a performance artist who was hitchhiking from Italy to Israel, while wearing a wedding dress, to send a message of peace. She was raped and murdered by someone who picked her up. This is horrific and tragic, but it also demonstrates that no matter how hard we may wish for peace, without the ability to defend ourselves we -- as individuals and as nations -- are prey to those who wish to destroy us.
