Mailed in my old passport Fri. Apr. 18
Received my new passport Sat. Apr. 26
Not bad, State Department!

(I'm curious, though: I mailed it to an address in Philly and the new passport was mailed from New Hampshire. Is the Philly address "virtual" and the USPS redirects directly to the local office, or did it actually make it through Philly and still arrive in about a week?)

Speaking of "about a week," today is the 8th day of the Omer, which is 1 week and 1 day.

Funny: mine's up next month, and I just renewed my driver's license online yesterday.

I've never done it by mail: is it really as easy as it sounds?

Yup. Download the pdf, type in your answers, print it out, get your photos, mail it all in. I tried doing the photos at home but wasn't happy with the printout quality so I paid $8 for AAA to take them.

I couldn't renew my driver's license online this year since I did last time. That wasn't too bad, either; I went to the Watertown RMV at 8:20 (they open at 8:30) and I was done by 8:45.

I'm not familiar with the process. Do the two have to be related? (Is your old passport modified and returned to you, for example?) Or could Philly be the central receiving site, and they marked receipt of the old passport in that system, which then allowed release of a brand new passport from the outbound dispatch nearest you?

The old passport is returned (under separate cover, also with a NH postmark in this case).

For normal renewals, they return the old one. Alas, if you get your passport replaced because it is delaminating, they DON'T return the old one to you. I have never forgiven them for not returning the one with my really cool stamps, e.g. British Antarctic Territory, Saint Helena, Ascension Island, etc.
