What don't you like about lilypond? I would have thought it would have appealed to you, especially its support for programmatic input. I have only done some minor things with it, but overall I have been impressed. It is also somewhat easier on the budget than finale... ;-)
Lilypond is like TeX. (No wonder!) If your material is written and you want it to look beautiful, and you're willing to invest the effort into the code/run/debug cycle, it seems to do an adequate job. But if you want something quick-and-reasonable, with the ability to see what you're doing interactively and to have it play back with high-quality orchestral samples, it misses the mark.
I've put in my time as a TeX hacker, but this isn't the time for it.
When I'm trying to compose a 2-hour oratorio, I need a tool that gets in my way as little as possible. Finale gets in my way about 20%. Lilypond would be close to 99%, I'm afraid.
