Last night, I watched the first episode of PBS Kids' Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman with my kids. Overall, a cool show -- it's a "reality" game show with an animated dog as the host. In the first episode, one team had to find all the planet models from the Boston Museum of Science scale model of the solar system---so they were in places we all know, like our local T stop.

But at one point, Ruff Ruffman refered to an LOC call number as "the Dewey Decimal System." Now, if this were Project Runway I could forgive such a gaffe. But a PBS show aimed at teaching kids ought to know the difference.

Needless to say, I fired off a complaint.

I do hope it was a gentle complaint.

It was the merest whisper of dissatisfaction.

Yeah that bugged me too. But then I was raised on DDS and that's what I still prefer, by gum!

But that show was GREAT. It was like an MIT Mystery Hunt for kids with an enjoyable educational theme. The animation was slick and fun (stylewise similar to what they do on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), Ruff's banter was funny, and the show was filled with nice touches including equipment that broke down and not cutting the contestants any slack for getting caught in traffic and missing the time limit. I loved that aspect of it: very Amazing Race, so kids will relate to it.

At one point one of the contestants playfully complains to the camera/Ruff about the equipment problems, and they later end up missing their arrival time by 3 seconds. Ruff wonders aloud where they could have shaved off some time, and he replays the complaint: exactly 3 seconds long. Burn!

Coming up later in the season (though they previewed it yesterday) is an episode about kites, which was supposed to be about "cats," but Ruff misunderstood his boss. Ha!

Many of the upcoming episodes look cool. Norm Abram in "This Old Lemonade Stand"? An "Iron Chef" spoof? Space Camp? I am so watching this with the kids.

You have to admit, "Dewey" just sounds funnier.
But your point well taken, Andrew. My Bad.

Ruff Ruffman.

ps. My comments have not been approved by WGBH or PBS.
