I have jury duty tomorrow. On the off chance that I get impaneled, it just occurred to me that there's probably a techinah out there for asking Hashem that one should rule correctly and that one not accidentally pervert justice. Anyone have a source? I recall something along those lines from Mesechet Berakhot but I may not have time to find it tonight.... And my rabbi is on vacation....

Except that you're ruling according to MA state law, rather than Torah law, so I'm not completely sure you can avoid perversion of justice.

Personally my techinah would be that I not be impaneled.

Yeah, yeah. I already know that you don't think I'm a real citizen because I can't shoot you. ;-)

Oh, now, don't sell yourself short. Just cuz you (possibly) couldn't hit the broad side of a barn doesn't mean you couldn't shoot me at this point (and until the OB fulfills the Jesse-Jacksonesque "if you don't PROduce, I will INduce." And as we all know, you don't need legal papers to get a gun: the going price is a $200 Target gift card.

Berakhot 28b / Shulchan Arukh Orach Chayyim 110:8 / Mishnah Brurah 110:36?

Thanks. What I had been thinking of but not really applicable after all. Phooey.

I can just see him, sitting there in the jury room, doing puzzle after puzzle, and the horrified/admiring expressions on the people sitting nearby.

Eh, they couldn't see the title of the book. For all they know, I was struggling with Mondays from the LA Times.

Our big night out was to see A Scanner Darkly. Crossword puzzle movies can wait for those long nights of nursing our (b'ezrat haShem) next little leech. I assume it won't be too long before it's available on DVD.

Sounds like a wise move... (You left the NEBF with only one book? I'm impressed!)

Did I say I left with only one book? I only said I got a book of crosswords. I also got two copies of the Hagstrom Metro Boston road atlas and a 20th-anniversary Magic School Bus book.

Ah, OK. :-) Why 2 copies of the atlas? I thought you had 1 car now.

No, we still have two cars. (One is currently in the shop, but that's temporary.)

I thought you were going to sell the Taurus when you bought the van... I must have misremembered.
