"High School Quiz Show" is a local WGBH production which is just what it sounds like. A few days ago, they sent email to WGBH members inviting us to attend a taping this weekend as part of the studio audience. We signed up for this morning's second taping. (Today they were taping two semifinals and the season finale.)
Because they want to ensure a full studio, they actually let more people sign up than there are seats; once the studio is full the additional audience is shunted to a side auditorium where they can watch on monitors. Since the whole point was for us to show the kids how a TV show is made, we got there about 45 minutes early.
As it turned out, they were about to start shooting the first taping, but they still had four empty seats in the studio that they wanted to fill. They asked us if we were there to root for a specific school; we answered "no". So we got hustled in to the studio just before they started taping; yay!
(Of course, we're not allowed to say which two teams we saw or talk about any of the questions. I will just say that I was surprised both by what these kids knew and by what they didn't.)
Overall we had a good time. The roving cameraman loved Tani's bright shirt, but when he came to do a run-up-the-stairs closeup Tani was unfortunately looking the other direction, so the cameraman kept on going and zoomed in on Heather, who did a very good impression of an enthusiastic audience member unaware of the camera in her face. :-)
There was one moment when the host muffed it -- he read on past the end of the question and started to read the answer. I expected that a backstage judge would call "cut" and they'd start the timed round over again, but they kept going. I suppose they'll clean it up in post-production; as it ended up, it didn't affect the outcome of the game.
"Our" episode will air on May 8 at 7pm on WGBH. The first game of the season airs tonight at 7.
