I was taking an online survey the other day, and it asked if I was an early adopter.... and I had to be truthful and answer that nowadays, I only buy gadgets once I have an established need for them. I feel like I've squandered my geek cred. No more Video Toasters for me, sorry.

It seems to me that most new gadgets these days are modifications of existing gadgets, rather than entirely new gadgets. So if what you have now is working for you there may be less allure to changing over.

There's a difference between geek cred and being a sheep, even a cutting-edge, leader-of-the-pack sheep. Even in the Video Toaster days, you didn't seem to buy it just because it was new, but because there were things you wanted to do with it. You might have rationalized a bit to overestimate how much use it would be, but you -did- actually play with it quite a bit, as I remember. You also had Media Lab dreams at the time, of that being your career.

I'm amazed that I even remember what you are talking about. :-) I don't think I was ever (or ever will be) an early adopter.
