So the Chanticleer Mass arrived yesterday, and tonight [livejournal.com profile] introverte and I sat down and listened to it. And our unanimous review is....

All of the contemporary composers seemed to be going for the big, dramatic slow movement. The Credo/Ani Ma'amin had a few faster sections and interesting rhythms, but other than that they were all draggy. The Eastern Orthodox Sanctus used Western tonalities when we were thirsting for something modal already; the Sufi Gloria was basically one theme over and over and over and.... The start of the Agnus Dei was the best of the bunch -- beautiful theme, lush harmonies, but then it got slow and repetitious, too. The Gabrielli selections were the best, and that's a shame.

So afterwards, [livejournal.com profile] introverte said to me, "I need a palate cleanser." I did, too -- so I put on the Missa Hilarious which, of course, was what she had in mind as well. "Angus Dei" rocks.
