OK, so the first part of the evening was frustrating --- all the kids were so wound up that it took far too long to get them to sleep. Eventually, we had to separate them; once Tani and Alissa were asleep H and I took the five-minute walk to the local outpost of Burgers Bar for a romantic(?) dinner date for two. We each had the house burger, with the fresh Chimicouri sauce mixed with the Garlic Mayo sauce. It was excellent, as were the onion rings. The fries were so-so.

The young lady who took our order had OK English, but there were some things for which I needed to use my less-than-OK Hebrew. For example, she had trouble understanding our name (to put on the order) until I said "yarok" (which is the color green). (On the other hand, I didn't embarrass myself as badly as I had the other day at the sufganiyot place, when I tried asking for "mappitim" and the lady behind the counter said with a smile, "Mappiyot? You did mean 'napkins', right?"

On the walk there, we were struck by how many more stars we could see than we're used to back home. Orion was quite high in the sky compared with what we're used to (we're at 35 degrees North latitude, about 10 degrees further south from Boston). We're at the southern tip of Efrat, looking south, and there's just not a lot of light pollution out here.

While we were eating, the 10:30 news break came on. People in the restaurant paused their conversation to watch, but there wasn't really any new information from Gaza and for the most part people resumed their conversations before the news break was over.

After dinner we wandered around the plaza in which the burger joint is located; most of the stores were closed, of course, but there's a bookstore that looks like it has a nice selection; it also has many chanukiyot (which are on the kids' shopping lists as well as mine). The hours may not work out too well us, though, given our other plans. We'll have to see. They're having a 25% off sale on "Aquariums" --- those are the chanukiyot enclosed in a glass rectangular prism for lighting outside. (I posted a picture of those on Thursday.)
