Can you recommend a book?

There's a free jazz concert in the plaza outside our office building on Thursdays in June, July, and August. I was enjoying yesterday's but realized that I still don't understand jazz. When I'm listening to classical or rock music, I can keep track of the structure and the current chord. I can't do that with jazz.

There are lots of books on how to listen to jazz. Can anyone recommend one in particular? (I'd especially like to find a good one that assumes the reader already understands how to listen to music with, let's call it, more traditional Western harmonic structure.)

Is that a jazz concert that's free, or a concert of free jazz? Good luck understanding the latter. :-)
