Am I confused? 24D appears to be DOGGONED for "Blamed" and I'm not sure I can make that connection in one hop. I mean, sure, "blamed" and "damned" could connect as past imperfect verbs, and "damned" and "doggoned" would connect as past participles. But I can't come up with a sentence in which "blamed" and "doggoned" can replace one another. What am I missing?

Never encountered that usage before. NI3 supports it but it's not in 11C (which I checked before posting).

It's an older usage but I wouldn't blink if someone used it to me (that person would probably be in their 70s or 80s).

Would you really say that, Qaqaq, or were you being facetious? It didn't make sense to me, either.

Well, I personally probably wouldn't say it, but then I wouldn't likely say "dadgum" or "doggoned" either. I do recognize the usage though.

I think you should start saying "dadgum".

We could then call him "Lake-qaq" (TAR reference).

DOGGONED was my last entry in that puzzle as well. I think {Blasted} would have been a better clue choice.

I had no problem with that "blamed" clue. Took a few ticks to figure out its meaning was in this sense.

I liked [Blamed] as the clue. It kept me guessing for a long time, and I like it when a crossword puts up a valiant fight. If the puzzle's too easy, it just gets a bad reputation and I won't respect it in the morning.

Andrew, I don't see an e-mail address for you, so I'll let you know here that Crossword Fiend (http://crosswordfiend.blogspot.com/) is two days into the new shtick of hiding all the spoilers behind a cut. I think you once said you don't read it because you're not always caught up with the crosswords, and you weren't the only one, so I encourage you to swing on by when you're caught up through this past Thursday.
